Be Informed: Hazards That Affect Our County

In Shelby County, as well as the State of Ohio, flooding is the #1 hazard that affects our lives and communities. Whether riverine, localized, or flash flooding, the devastation that flooding brings can impact every county resident.

Severe weather, whether winter or summer storms, is the hazard that occurs most frequently in our county. Power outages can occur after any storm due to high winds, ice, or snow.

Although tornadoes are most common in the spring and summer months, tornadic activity can threaten our lives in the fall and winter as well. Most recorded tornadoes that affected our county are on the lower end of the Enhanced Fujita scale (EF-0 to EF-1), but in April 1965, an EF-4 tornado ripped through the county causing much destruction, injuries and death.

Shelby County is the most seismic area in the State of Ohio having more earthquakes occur here than any other county. The area around the Village of Anna is especially known for earthquake activity.

There are industries in the county that produce, store, or transport hazardous materials. This, in addition to the Interstate 75 (I-75) corridor along with other highways and railways pose a threat for a hazardous materials spill at any time.
